Akira marks the conflict of two characters – an angry young woman and a cool and composed villain. Akira (Sonakshi Sinha) is the story of a girl who refuses to be a collateral damage in the shady dealings of a bunch of dirty cops and fights back.

Akira reluctantly leaves her hometown Jodhpur to move to Mumbai. Her idealism irks some of her college mates. Trouble starts when she inadvertently gets mixed up in a shady deal of four policemen, headed by ACP Rane (Anurag Kashyap). ACP Rane initially tries to get her bumped off, failing which he gets her certified as mentally imbalanced. Nobody believes Akira when she divulges the truth. The onus is on her to prove her innocence and punish the guilty, setting the stage for Kill Bill kind of action.

The first half is taut, even if the treatment is a little dated. The story moves swiftly and keeps the viewer wanting for more. The second half slows the tempo down. The film focuses too long on the wrongs done to Akira by the police with the complicity of medical professionals. As expected, Akira vanquishes her wrongdoers and emerges victorious.

Sonakshi Sinha delivers in the titular role. She proves she can confidently play a character far removed from those she played in Dabbangg, Rowdy Rathore and many such movies. She may not be up there with the veterans yet, but she does have the potential. Her action scenes are unconvincing though. She needed to tone up her physicality more to carry out the action sequences convincingly.

Konkana Sen Sharma shines in her short role. The surprise package of the film is Anurag Kashyap. He remarkably imparts an ordinariness to the character of ACP Rane while conniving and carrying out murders with a cold-blooded chameleon’s ease. He reminds of a reigned-in Nana Patekar. I won’t be surprised to see him more in front of the camera in the future than behind.

The screenplay could have been tighter. Rather than focusing on the travails of Akira, bringing in more convincing action could have done the film some good.  The film alternated between thriller and drama; treading the straight thriller path would have made it more interesting.

Akira may not be a masterpiece, but it is still a one-time watch, if for nothing then for the performances of Sonakshi Sinha and Anurag Kashyap.
